Nicola’s Speech at DCC AGM Introduction Firstly, thank you Nigel. And thank you to everyone who has made the effort to be here this evening. It is much appreciated as it is this sort of dedication that is the corner stone for the success of this Chamber of Commerce. Reflect on Nigel and What He Has Done Over the last two years Nigel has been a real inspiration for me. As an individual, Nigel is an action man, a doer. He focuses his business passion for success on the things that need to happen to ensure that success is brought about. He has embraced Dorking wholeheartedly and the town has much to thank him for. A man of belief, principles and values, he has demonstrated what we all need to do, and that is believe in the right future for Dorking. For example and testament to Nigel, his dogged determination to change the lights a pump corner, parking for businesses and the town and the significant investment into 50 mystery shoppers. On behalf of everybody, I would like to thank you so very much for everything you have contributed to this community and I know that even without the title of President of the Chamber of Commerce you will continue to support the town, and especially Ian Munro! As a little memento for your service in industry, I wanted to get you your very own Action Man. However, for what is now classed an antique, and sought after item (pretty much the way you are going), I did feel £200 was more in keeping with your wife’s spending habits – not mine! And so, a buy one get one free was more up my street! (hand over the RAF model to Nigel) Commercial success as we all know requires extremely hard work, can be very stressful and relentless. However it can hold a very rewarding future. So what does the future hold for Dorking and its business community? I feel, together and united we stand and divided we fall and fail. To remind ourselves, the Dorking Chamber of Commerce Objectives are: To promote, foster and advance commercial, industrial and professional enterprise. But I also feel it is much deeper than that. The Dorking Chamber of Commerce gives all of us as commercial business people a sense of belonging. Therefore in my capacity as President for 2008 that is the value that I wish to uphold. Combining & Unifying: I believe there is great strength in the sum of the Committee and the Chamber Members. As much as the future brings change, which can sometimes be controversial, we need to make sure that the future accommodates the traditions of many years gone by. That is what makes Dorking individual and so unique. Let us not forget this is our business, our town and our future. Finally, the position of Vice President needs to be filled. An advocate for the town, someone who will play an active part in the committee and a passion to get under the skin of the Dorking community. We will be appointing someone in the next four weeks and therefore whilst gathered here I would like to throw open to the floor that if anyone is interested in discussing this position with me and the committee members then I welcome your interest and please approach me at some point this evening. Now I would like to take our first step together and enjoy some time with colleagues, old and new over a glass of wine and nibbles kindly hosted by James Smith, Hotel Manager of The White Horse. Thank you. |
